Welcome!

Here are some poems I am thinking about including in my portfolio for my poetry MFA. I'd like to know about any thoughts you have about any of them, pointers, criticisms, etc. Your help is extremely appreciated. I have to make portfolios of 10, 12, and 15 poems.

Gideon's Daredevils

The old man waded up the stream of students in a suit
looking resolved.

holding a
tiny
green book with gold lettering

When I reached for it,
I regret,
I was afraid of bursting into flames
or being struck by lightning

and I bet that would've made that old man pretty upset

that I possessed the nerve to ask for one of his
tiny
green books with gold lettering

but the leather was cold and stiff
it felt
good
in my hand

the way a normal book does.

Imagine the thought process that goes
into planning an excursion like that
A half-dozen old men sitting around at
a church decide to get into a truck

and dive.

and drive to a college town to hand out a
tiny
green book with gold lettering

As I walked away he tried to say goodbye
but all that came out was
"What are you afraid of?"

War

All these bleary eyed kids

could go fight a war
when they are prepared to die:

it happens all too soon.

So instead of candle-light vigils
in public parks
mothers sobbing into handkerchiefs at funerals
and counseling for classmates

there could be medals on caskets

and stories that fall
out of old men's mouthes
as if they are coughing up dust

Then while the other children
grow and bend
they'll swear it all meant something

they'll swear it all wasn't
just
being
selfish

Elements

Carbon, Sulfur, Nitrogen
a lot of water
a blue ocean
a green sewer leaking out of your eyes.

fair is fair is fair
my body is a giant unfair.
my body is a giant mass
a mess of half sculpted statues of
the person I wanted to be be be
because I thought that those things

would catch your eye.
silly I.

Crescendos

Behind her the noise swelled
like a river, pudgy with dams

acoustic lungs, electric hands
and in the backyard, a lonely windchime

crescendos: the ground rumbles
we lose our grip on it, it sweats black oil
and wriggles out of our hands like a swamp-thing

The apex sprouts legs and grows up too quickly
becomes a microcosm, it's own entity
it is a killer, takes two heartbeats and leaves one
pining flesh's brief breath of crisp, real air

And down again, the echos retreat
the sounds drain out of the room
like water out of a bathtub

The air dies, hangs
a haunted zeppelin

Until all is quiet again
and the lights are extinguished

A Boy Drowns In The Jungle and No One is Around to Hear it

step step step
quicksand.
his arms kick like crazy

deadbeat limbs shocked
into accountability
concealed, undeniable

he is surprised to find
he has choked and died
there was no righteous fire

no time to regret
no time to forget
this is how a boy dies

and a beautiful
baby ghost
is born

Paula Bunyan

Our figures burn like cigarettes
young and immaculate before
old and forgotten like
broken, discarded dolls

Our figures burn like cigarettes
every rescinded touch will
torch our flesh as we undo
our double knotted fingers

Inhale the tall tales you told
about your teenage lover

'Collecting' is not 'Building'

I pulled your arms out through the wall and set them on a chair
we held hands while I read a book because your arms weren't up for much
but they were soft.

A Bird dropped your eyes off on a window ledge and I lunged over
like pearls covered in a patch of obsidian where you should've been
looking at me. I placed them at eye level.

Sometimes I glanced over in their direction and saw you staring at me
A Mouse crawled by with one of your scarves and I snatched it away
and draped it over the back of your chair

Your lips seeped up through the floorboards, which was good
Because now we could talk and I needed someone to talk to
on account of all the spare body parts

I kissed your lips, but I didn't use tongue and neither did you
because I have not found your tongue yet. You told me you weren't upset.
Your hands stroke mine in consolation.

I have been waiting here for more parts to install onto you
but I didn't send for any. I don't think you are a full set
and now I don't believe in Love.

The Colossus

The colossus is hungry and his teeth are wooden
tree stumps. He growls. He is embarrassed
of his teeth. They look dirty. A bird tried
to nest in them one time.

The colossus gets no food, his teeth
take root and sprout until he can't close
his mouth and he's spitting out leaves
and he's spitting out loads of leaves.

His jaw snaps and he is crying and bleeding
and a forest is growing out of his mouth
so the mayor plants cherry blossoms.

He recently read an article in Newsweek
about a festival. He is already planning his own
and directing the colossus to the nice part of town.

On Being American

In 1991 I set sail for america
The indians came ashore and handed me
guns peanuts in a glass dish at a bar
beer cans and the new england patriots
I'm not vegan or gay like all of my
friends Americans have no excuse
I must consume potato chips
and beers and women and raw steak

and lay in the sun drunk.

Trace the veins of your tree with my
irradiated water mother Her excuse
stumbles and my perfect glass life chips
My cousin joins the Navy and hits the bar
with all of his friends They are patriots
My grandmother tells me I don't belong to america
when her true grandson is overseas at the bar Me?
My i-teeth are not hers so she readies her steak
Standing on a Cherry tree the mayor regards
the Cherry tree he is presently standing on.
"God Damn", he says, "This is a beautiful tree"
From his perch he can see the tonsils.

He is flapping his wings and flirting with
the joy of flying. He tries to spout feathers
from his arms. He takes off his jacket and then
tries to spout feathers from his arms again. He caws.

School children are enamored with the mayor.
They glue fluffy crafty feathers to their arms
and stand in the mouth, tweeting with admiration

One writes a report on the mayor and it goes like this:
We are all birds except the mayor, high in the trees
because he was wearing a jacket at the time.

The Mayor

The mayor was born a long time ago
of course, he wasn't the mayor then
because we made him the mayor out of love
and fear of his strong, handsome features

He loved his mother as a child
until he grew up and learned about his mother
and began to love her less for all her flaws
but baby boys do this all the time

When he was made mayor no one picked him
we weren't afraid of him, and sometimes
kids would play games on his lawn in defiance

But the mayor was a powerful man, even though
he wasn't and soon he was building tennis courts
and leading the colossus to the lot by his house

The Waiting Game

The front porch of the mayor's house
is possibly a great place for oral sex
In the morning, the mayor finds him
moping around picking his teeth

there are flowers in his hands
it is hilarious. They laugh while
outside of the porch it is raining
and the real one laying down is wet

He exclaims in bursts of feathers and
angry, dark soup. From the mud, the
exploited can be heard, sobbing.

But numbers have been crunched and he
simply has to die in the mud. There is
no money for coffins or gold.

The Time the Fire Station was Called Out

In mud his face is made of gray smoke
completely. He uses his hands to
massage the mud into tiny clay
houses where children who love him

live bathed in not sunlight but blissful
truthfulness. If no one else, they will
understand him dying in the mud
in a fashionable part of town

His face is put out by the fire department
but it's just smoke. "We will take
no chances, my heart hungers for red cherries"

the words skitter under a moustache like
mice from under a rug, bouncing around
until they are free and frighteningly visible

Eaten

Eaten and gobbled little turks
grinning turkish grins sheepily
forgetting and mumbling all their
sins to the sun and the sand

At the spring at the home we pray to
the rain oh rain rain your rain on us
and we will grow with our bellies
like little happy sheep in the green

Invented the jumpy people stitched like
monsters from horror movies except opposite
beautiful and undeniable and swelling
with the oceans circling the walls

Our great home is sinking and sleeping
like a chunk of dirt discarded in a tub
our time is dead and we were not invited
but we are here again no surprises

The College Kids

The college kids come home for the summer
when everything is beautiful or in bloom
and best of all the mayor can avoid them
if he wants and he usually does

They can be heard down the street talking
mostly about space time: what is the best
application of differential equations
and what is The Beloved Ghost, really?

Some of the college kids are home for summer
and the rest have internships ³and, like, you hear
horror stories but it¹s actually pretty cool.²

When they find him in the park they sit
at his mouth and pass their time calculating
the breaths left in his hollow chest

The TV Commercial

The mayor and his friends live
on the TV, stroking the cherry tree.
"Goddamn", a voice says, disembodied
"That's a beautiful tree".

Local access employees, after learning about the
tree commercial, all quit but it
was no big deal because one
commercial on repeat is no big deal.

The children pranced wildly around
the tree after school in the mud
and the adults all said it was no big deal.

The mayor hired a dash architect
and he drew up a tree house.
It sucked. It was no big deal.

The Tree Bombs Tears

He sets his Pall Malls down and writes:
"Dear fire chief this is the fire chief
There is a fire, chief. I am concerned
The beautiful contents of my mouth..."

The proud handsomeness of an old Oak
The colorful flamboyance of a Maple
The quiet comfort of the thirsty Willow
The abandoned, unwanted Chinese daughter

Is the sad Cherry, aflame with neglect
And crying fleshy red tears on fire
Onto children dancing at its twisting feet

"...There is a fire chief i know i believe
I love you fire chief but my sweet relief
My thirst is brighter than a forest fire."

The Ghost City

Treetops and muddy swamps:
A new civilization for a bloody age
or so I dreamt from a prison cell
high above the trees, making paper
snowflakes that dropped to the ground
until they hit an evil wind and burnt in midair
like flak shells

A bubbling feeling sawing the air in half
and turning small animals inside out
A boy walked too close and they called the sheriff out
but he was stumped. He took his hat off and I
sent more snowflakes down but he was spooked
I was spooked and ghosts like orange juice
and runny noses so it didn't help

In the night one can still here coin flips ring out like
shotguns

Machines

In the doctors laboratory I isolated
ghost skin and watched the ether-goo
trickle-green across the trickle-white
and fickle-how you still made me watch
the girl I like kissing the world is ending
the formulas were perfected but the image
was impacted. My heart wasn't in it before,
to say it plainly. In the morning we woke
up and you tore my flesh off with your
fingernails. You dragged me through the park
and beat on my corpse with a stick until
the plane landed and we had to go home.
In the doctors laboratory I sat in the dark
until you came in and started a fire and
the firemen told us to go home.

Kuelap

This rain is so thick it is a
Toyota Camry in Seattle, Hippie Mecca.
People enjoy the vistas there and the people
enjoy people because they are the right
people.

In Seattle, all of the gorgeous dogs are
required to be on leashes even though
all of the dogs are the nicest dog you've
ever had the pleasure of. Nice dogs. Nice
Humans.

If ever there was a way out of this rat race
you can bet your ass it is an elevator in
Seattle that goes straight up to not God
himself. From it, you can spit on the
president.

Seattle is built out of the side of that
great Montana and the bastards at the gates
plead to be let in but listen, I've been looking
through the papers and, I mean, the zoning
stipulates...

I want to herd my sheep right up that mountain
until it looks like the clouds are playing catch
and the Seattlites are just feeding off the vibes,
bro. It's like, we're soaking up the energy of the
earth.

Cloudia

I'm going to have a severe daughter
and she will be named Cloudia
Cloudia will come home from school
smelling like nail polish and looking for
something to fuck up.
In my house I will devote entire rooms
to storing things of this nature and
Cloudia will come home and smash them (superscript 1).
If I tell her my favorite colors are brown
and orange she will smile and call me
a cunted cunt
and then hit me in the face. Cloudia
sets me on fire in my sleep with a
zippo lighter (superscript 2) she stole from a
convenience store and Parent-Teacher Conferences
have never been a problem but sometimes
I want to tell them about my girl
but it's hard to tell if people are listening.

i. Currently my mother is enrolled in a ceramics class.
ii. But I did quit smoking.

On Stokers

Bandying nonsense, creeping disgust
Suspended in animated dusk walks the
segregated ancestor. He is a tall trench coat
He is a daffodil in the sun and his name
is not a name, it is a knock-knock joke
that contains the spell that will immobilize
you in your very chair.

Your overly egged on dog is traumatized in blue
Send fires out through the jungles of the backyard
to unearth the gilded oncologist of deliverance
clear the room in your lungs for his space elevator
needle cache and his noodly sleeve
His industry-car is the tollhouse cookie of words.

The rugged stains the carpet draped ceiling tiles
Nucleus Accumbens buzzing and stopwatch starting
is a climb up from bed necessary?
The nugget of Gila Monster stitched onto your lapel
is starting to bleed. If you call it draconian I
am prepared to call it business and give you a nice
firm handshake.

And They Call It Thunder

Jeff is a giant squid and he has
Golden teeth and an eye patch
and a sweet ass sword he uses
to chop ships in half.

He lives on a rock and screams
his squid screams to the moon at
night, unsettling pelicans. He
makes a game out of banging rocks
together every time he sees lightning
over port but he's high and
his reaction time is way slow.

And they call it thunder.
Children swim out to sea to
steal his triscuits.

Jeff throws the Golden Fleece
from tentacle to tentacle because
Jason was a two-armed bitch.

Piano Solo

but you but you don't but you don't and you
fish don't the sea of fish is you and don't
but me fish don't but the sea does.
the sea says so.
and you will but me won't in the fish sea
sleeping said you when you went fishing won't fish

and I in my silk pajamas
and mother in her hello mother.

She scales my silk shelf sea
fish swim in the shale sea and
fish swim in mother's silk
but you won't but I you in the sea
won't possibly embed pearls in the fish
and they swim fishes into the river
into the sea.

Orbit

The salesman moves into his house on Wednesday
and wakes up on Thursday underwater, his cat
is upset and a mermaid is watching him sleep.
She has black hair and a sea shell bikini on.
She is baring her sharp teeth. The moon passes
low overhead, humming like a biplane.

He opens his mouth to speak and the words come out:
Telephone hello we are enter we are enter enter
you not and we I enter hello please moon please
make my house the house. Moon says hello too close
the house says moon, close to hello get out
hello moon enter get moon out get out.

He is underwater.

The salesman gets the sense he is being unclear
he gets the sense the mermaid is not impressed
by him. He grooms his wet mustache, trying to be
mysterious before the mermaid who is opening her mouth
wider and wider until from in the midst of her teeth
an immense missile emerges.

It has a picture of a trucker painted red on it,
seductively posing, fat tumbling endlessly in
all directions like a waterfall. The trucker's
fat soaks everything in fat and everything is wet
The salesman stands back in awe as the missile
explodes from the mermaids mouth and tears her

apart like the best shark.

i carry it with me

here is only the deepest root
no fate of whatever beautiful secret
you hope can hide your mind

know this: I am never
without the moon, the wonder
that’s keeping the stars apart

i am the bud of the tree
growing higher than the sky

i will always call whatever is
my Heart

Sex

The sexiest tree is the coconut because it drops things.
I think that they should make a snack food
and it could entice the chickens.
I say this because a chicken is the right
bird to share a coconut tree with.

They can't fly away!

A pelican is a meaner bird entirely, I think
There is something unsexy about the pelican
and it is not ironic to have a sexy tree and
a big ol' dumb pelican, trying to steal trout or
some shit from your pocket. Pelicans need to learn.

In church sometimes I think sex is real
I think about sex. I think I think about sex
in church because it is the worst place to think
about sex. There is a way in which sex takes the
color out of real life that also makes people fat and sad.
